CoQ10
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a fat-soluble compound that helps generate energy in your cells. As we age our body produces less of CoQ10, therefore it can be obtained from a good diet and supplements.
Research suggests it may help improve heart health and blood sugar regulation, protect against certain types of cancer, and reduce migraine frequency. Low levels of CoQ10 may be associated with diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders. CoQ10 helps generate energy in cells (mitochondria) by making the antioxidant adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is involved in cell energy transfer. It also serves as an antioxidant to protect cells against free radicals. It is a very potent antioxidant and may reduce the oxidative damage that leads to muscle fatigue, skin damage, and brain and lung diseases.
CoQ10 could also help restore optimal energy production levels and reduce oxidative damage which may improve treatment outcomes for people with heart failure.
Cellular damage or a hormonal imbalance results in reduced skin moisture, as well as the thinning of the layers of the skin. By applying CoQ10 directly to the skin, it may help reduce oxidative damage caused by UV rays, decrease the depth of wrinkles, and also promote antioxidant protection.
CoQ10 has also been used to have an effect on exercise performance by decreasing cell oxidative stress and improving mitochondrial function. Oxidative stress causes cell damage, which can result in metabolic diseases such as, diabetes and insulin resistance. A meta analysis research suggested that CoQ10 may help improve insulin sensitivity and regulate blood sugar levels which can be very beneficial to those who have type 2 diabetes.
Mitochondrial function tends to decrease with age, resulting in the death of brain cells and contribute to conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. As a result of oxidative stress, it could affect memory, cognition, and physical functions. So, taking CoQ10 may reduce harmful compounds (free radicals) and lead to slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Garlic (Allium sativum)
Garlic supplements may help prevent and reduce the severity of illnesses like the flu and common cold. Garlic contains antioxidants that support your body’s protective mechanisms against oxidative damage. These antioxidants may significantly reduce oxidative stress and lower your risk of related diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.
Garlic is safe and healthy for most people. But if you’re taking blood thinners, talk with a doctor before drastically increasing your garlic intake. Most of garlic’s health benefits are due to the formation of sulfur compounds and the most well-known compound is allicin.
Garlic in rich in vitamin C, vitamin B6, manganese selenium and fiber. Garlic extract can boost your immune system and when taken during the cold and flu season one can experience less severe symptoms. This suggests that the compounds in garlic may have antiviral properties. In addition to boosting your immune system, it may help prevent viruses from entering host cells.
According to the WHO, cardiovascular diseases like heart attack and stroke are responsible for more deaths than almost any other condition. High blood pressure is one of the most important factors that may lead to these diseases. Garlic supplements has been able to reduce blood pressure in people with high blood pressure. This has been attributed to the allicin in garlic which may limit the production of angiotensin II, a hormone that increases blood pressure. Garlic supplements seem to reduce total and LDL (bad) cholesterol, particularly in those with slightly high cholesterol
Ginger
Ginger contains gingerol and has been used to aid digestion, reduce nausea, and help fight the flu and the common cold. Gingerol has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that help reduce oxidative stress.
Ginger may help relieve nausea and vomiting for people undergoing certain types of surgery, and it may also help reduce chemotherapy-related nausea. Ginger may be very effective against nausea, including pregnancy-related nausea, commonly known as morning sickness.
Some research suggests ginger may have anti-diabetic properties. A study found a significant reduction in fasting blood sugar and HbA1c in people with type 2 diabetes after taking ginger supplements.
Ginger may help manage indigestion, known as functional dyspepsia. Individuals who have this condition have symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, feeling too full, belching, and nausea and often occurs with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Consuming ginger before eating a main meal significantly improved the symptoms of indigestion in people with functional dyspepsia, compared with taking a placebo.
High levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol are definitely linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Researchers found that ginger consumption significantly reduced triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, while increasing HDL cholesterol.
Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo biloba has possible anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacities. Ginkgo contains compounds, flavonoids and terpenoids, that have strong antioxidant effects which help to neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals. It may also help improve circulation.
According to Traditional Chinese medicine, ginkgo seeds were used to open “channels” of energy to different organ systems, including the kidneys, liver, brain, and lungs. Apparently, Ginkgo has the ability to increase blood flow to various parts of the body. Therefore, among those with heart disease who supplemented with ginkgo, it revealed an immediate increase in blood flow to multiple parts of the body. This was attributed to a 12% increase in levels of circulating nitric oxide, a compound responsible for dilating blood vessels.
Grape Seed Extract
Grape seeds are rich in antioxidants, including phenolic acids, anthocyanins, flavonoids, and oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPCs). Due to it antioxidants, (proanthocyanidins) GSE can help prevent disease and protect against oxidative stress, tissue damage, and inflammation.
Studies have researched the effects of GSE on high blood pressure showed a significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure (the top and bottom number) by an average of 6.08 mmHg and 2.8 mmHg, respectively.
Another benefit of grape seeds is those with an elevated blood level of LDL (bad) cholesterol. The oxidation of LDL cholesterol significantly increases this risk and plays a central role in atherosclerosis, or the buildup of fatty plaque in your arteries This is a well-known risk factor for heart disease. Taking GSE inhibited the oxidation of fats in the blood, thus resulting in a reduction in oxidized LDL. Therefore, GSE likely protected against further heart damage.
Interesting to note that one of the components of GSE is gallic acid, which have shown to inhibit the formation of fibrils by beta-amyloid peptides. Clusters of beta-amyloid proteins in the brain are characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease. Therefore, GSE may prevent memory loss, improve cognitive status and brain antioxidant, and reduce brain lesions and amyloid clusters.
The antioxidants in GSE may help alleviate the oxidative stress, inflammation, and tissue damage from chronic diseases. So, by supplementing with GSE, numerous benefits include better heart, brain, kidney and liver health.
Panax ginseng
Ginseng, also known as Asian ginseng, is a species of the genus Panax in the Araliaceae family. It has fleshy roots and can be used for medicinal purposes. It mainly grows in East Asia, especially in cold regions. Although ginseng has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, modern clinical research is still under discussion. Ginseng is a common medicinal material in Asia, and American ginseng (American ginseng) is also widely used in North and Central America. Various ginseng slices and extract health products can be found in many herbal medicine shops and supermarkets. The saponin contained in the root of ginseng is its active ingredient. The wild ginseng in Changbai Mountain, China has a high content of saponin, but it is not easy to obtain and is expensive. Ginseng is not easy to cultivate. South Korea began to develop Korean ginseng cultivation in the early 18th century, and the United States began to cultivate American ginseng in the mid-19th century.
Perennial herb, distributed in areas with an altitude of 500-1100 meters, generally grows in coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forests or mixed woods on gentle slopes or slopes of mountains with small temperature differences between day and night, and likes a cool and humid climate. Its roots are hypertrophic, spindle-shaped, often forked, and the overall shape resembles a human head, hands, feet and limbs, therefore it is known as ginseng. Ginseng is called the "king of herbs" and is one of the well- known "Three Treasures of Northeast China" (ginseng, Ganoderma lucidum, and deer antlers). It is a famous and precious medicinal material known to both Chinese and foreigners, young and old.
Ginseng has the effects of greatly replenishing vitality, restoring pulses and consolidating deficiency, replenishing spleen and lungs, promoting fluid production and quenching thirst, calming the mind and improving intelligence. It may help with symptoms such as, fatigue, lack of appetite, nausea and vomiting, loose stools, weak coughs and shortness of breath, spontaneous sweating and sudden loss of consciousness, and palpitations!
Ge Gen
Ge Gen (Kudzu root) is the edible part of a trailing vine, native to several Asian countries and used for purposes like treating fevers, diarrhea, and even diabetes and heart disease.
Some studies suggest kudzu root that contains the antioxidant puerarinm an isoflavone extract which may help treat alcohol use disorder or alcohol dependence. It may also help treat liver damage, and menopausal symptoms.
Other benefits may reduce inflammation (isoorientin), by boosting antioxidant levels. It may also promote heart health and alleviate severe headaches.
Niacin
Also known as one of the B vitamins (B3) is water soluble and reduces the risk of another heart attack in people who have had a heart attack and have high cholesterol. Niacin helps prevent buildup of cholesterol and fats along the walls of blood vessels in people with high cholesterol and heart disease. It also reduces the number of triglycerides in the blood in people with very high levels who are at risk of diseases affecting the pancreas and lower cholesterol levels.
As with all 8 B vitamins, niacin helps convert food into energy by aiding enzymes. Specifically, niacin is a major component of NAD and NADP, two coenzymes involved in cellular metabolism. Furthermore, it plays a role in cell signaling and making and repairing DNA. The key role of niacin is to synthesize the coenzymes nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP), which are involved in over 400 biochemical reactions in your body.
Niacin works by lowering both your low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglycerides in your blood and raising your high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good” cholesterol. Niacin supplements may be recommended for people with high cholesterol and heart disease risk factors but cannot take statins. Besides improving blood fat levels, niacin also has a role in releasing prostaglandins. These are chemicals that help your blood vessels expand, thus, improving blood flow and reducing blood pressure. For this reason, niacin may play a role in the prevention or treatment of high blood pressure.
